Can you imagine being the captain of a vessel where 2/3 of your passengers are whiners and complainers? The food is never good enough; why is the weather so rough; can’t this ship go any faster… on and on. You secretly hope a giant tidal wave will come wash these people overboard because an otherwise lovely voyage is making you stressed and unhappy. “Who allowed these people to come aboard? Why did I accept anyone and everyone who was able to pay the fare? Can I fire my passengers?” you wonder.
As a business owner, you want to ensure that your company stands strong in the face of any type of storm. It could be a natural disaster (hello, Covid) or a personnel issue or a recession or, who knows what’s coming next, a plague of locusts of Biblical proportions?
One of the most critical elements of a successful and strong business is the confidence that comes when you’ve allowed only the best passengers to climb aboard. They are love sailing, are delighted by your ship, appreciative of your crew, and will be loyal and understanding in the face of a crisis. In short, they make the business of serving them ENJOYABLE.
We’d love to come to work every day with a positive energy of serving our purpose; but even more, we want to know that when tough times hit, our clients will still stand strong with us and not abandon us.
So take a look – who do you have on deck today?
- After a conversation with each of your current clients, do you feel ENERGIZED or DRAINED?
- If they called to tell you they will stop working with you, will you be mildly concerned because of a loss of revenue, or genuinely sorry to no longer develop your relationship with them?
- Of your current clients, who is not meeting YOUR expectations?
That’s right – it’s not our goal to haul in any customer at all. It’s our job to pick and choose only the very best people to serve and support.
Are your sales down? You feel as if you’re starting from scratch. Congratulations! You’re now at the wonderful time of designing exactly what your business will be like, who you will serve and how you will serve them. Take full advantage of this “slowdown” to design and build the business you always dreamed you would have.
A large part of that is your ideal client profile. Not where they live or how much they make – but – what type of PERSON are they? As a human being, are they in line with your personality, your values, your beliefs? What do you have in common with them? What are all the ways you relate to them – person-to-person? Seek to find customers who are a natural match for YOU and they will be a wonderful match for your business.
Still serving customers that make you miserable? I give you permission to toss them overboard! Empty out your client list and start looking for only the best people to bring on as clients.
It may feel scary, but we need to live our mission and purpose. We need to seek joy as well as profitability. That is one of the secrets of building an unsinkable business – to carefully select who we welcome aboard to join our voyage with us.
If finding WHO your ideal client is has always been a mystery to you, it’s one of the many ways I help my clients. I know my ideal client and WHY I welcome them aboard.
Let’s discuss how we can make running your business better – and unsinkable.
