how to know what success looks like

Have You Thought About What Success Looks Like to You?

Make 6 Figures!
10x Your Revenue!
Triple Your Results!
Uplevel Your Business!

How many times do those messages hit you in the face while browsing the internet? And how do you feel when you read those words?

What if — you don’t want to 10x or Triple or Uplevel?

Here’s the quiet and not-much-heard-about truth – not everyone wants to go BIG. Not everyone defines success the same way.

If you don’t want to 10x your revenue or make 6 figures, have you found yourself keeping that under your hat? You feel you can’t say that out loud because people may tend to label you as “not a real serious business owner” or they’ll tell you it’s because you don’t believe in yourself and if you just went outside of your comfort zone, you, too, could be a millionaire!

But comfort zone has nothing to do with defining what IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

I’m here to tell you that I believe in myself, I dare myself, I am a hard worker, but I don’t want those kinds of results. I want to build a great life that fits ME.

Recently I heard a friend and fellow business owner state that she wanted to “Right Size” her business. I wholeheartedly agree! I want to earn a living that will grant me a comfortable and pleasant life with a business that excites me every day.

Right Size Your Business – Start with Goals

Determine what kind of life you’d like to lead. Whatever goals you have, they belong to you and no one’s opinion matters. Your goals are just right. Knowing what you want to accomplish, how much money you need to get there, and how long you want to take to get to that level will help you right size your business. These goals allow you to serve your personal lifestyle and create achievable milestones.

Matching Goals to Revenue

Let’s face it – we all have bills to pay. What business and personal goals do you have that needs your business revenue to support? Do you want to renovate your home office; or replace your old dinosaur of a computer? Do you want to travel overseas 3 times a year; or take an annual road trip a few hundred miles away? Do you want to buy a vacation home or simply pay off the mortgage on your 1 home? How much money do you need to make to support your basic needs and beyond?

What limits do you have on your time?

Caring for your family is an example of a constraint on our time that we have to manage. If you have elderly parents, young children or grandbabies that will command parts of your daily, weekly, and monthly calendars, fill those slots in your calendar first. For example, I have elderly parents to visit and grandbabies to care for – not every day, but a few days per month. I love and cherish my time with them, so I block those slots in my calendar.

How much time will you devote to your business?

Once you have calculated the amount of revenue you’ll need to earn, decide how much time you want to devote to working on and working in your business to make that revenue goal each year. If you’re working part-time or full-time, that’s up to you, as long as you can make the math work.

How many client interactions can you handle and how will you manage the overflow?

Sometimes you will stand at the mathematical crossroads of deciding whether it is worth it to pay someone to pitch in somewhere in your business so you can take on more clients; or perhaps your choice is to simply take on less clients. You’re the only one to decide that, and your decision will be the correct one. Another business owner friend has calculated exactly the number of clients she can manage at one time; any more will be turned away because it’s her decision that she will give her clients her very best professional efforts. She has decided not to hire an employee.

How do you keep yourself focused?

Your goals, your constraints, your revenue, your clients, your time – it’s all up to you, but don’t keep fuzzy thoughts circling your head. Put them in a business plan. Print it and keep it somewhere handy. Somehow, when there is a printed document to touch, it’s “more real” than an electronic file. Do you feel that sitting down to write a big formal business plan is a drain on your energy? You’re probably using an old-school template. My Down to Earth Business Plan is much easier to use, plus we work together to make it truly fit your business. Learn more here.
