Not everyone is cut out to be a small business owner. If you own a business, you’d agree that we typically don’t like to be told what to do. Often we like to hear suggestions but hate carrying out someone else’s orders and being held accountable. If you’re like me, you joke about how you’re “unemployable”.

This drive to be independent and creative and hard working is exactly what you need to succeed as an entrepreneur. However, it’s exactly what’s holding you back.

This “I can do anything” attitude is fabulous – until it’s responsible for not allowing you to admit you can use a bit of help.

Are you that person who would rather drive lost than ask for directions or turn on a GPS? You were that kid who insisted on trying to tie your own shoelaces or dress yourself years before your body was ready to do it.

For the longest time as a new business owner, I simply refused to take on the services of a business guide and advisor. I was convinced they were going to make me take on projects and carry out tasks in a way that weren’t true to me. Also, I didn’t want to admit how much I didn’t know.

And getting a coach means admitting defeat, right?

Wrong!

Every successful celebrity or CEO uses the services of one or several mentors and guides. Top singers have vocal coaches. Award winning actors seek acting coaches.

These are the folks who don’t believe that seeking guidance means admitting defeat.

Quite the opposite – seeking guidance means you’ve reaffirmed your conviction that you WILL attain success. That you’re ready to open up and try something new.

Refusing to work with a trusted advisor is intentionally STAYING LOST out of pride and denial.

Admitting you can use some help is not being a coward – it’s being brave enough to step up and do what it takes.

The question you must ask yourself is – how important is it for me to make this business successful?

I can’t answer that for you. and you must be honest with yourself when you answer it.

So what if —

  • What if you worked with a trusted business advisor, admitted the problem areas in your business and looked forward to hearing their response?
  • What if they encouraged you to try something new?
  • What if they brought you more in tune with your goals?
  • What if they guided you toward taking action on the best path?

As a business growth strategist, I respect that you’re the owner of the business and will make all ultimate decisions yourself. I don’t direct you, I show you alternate routes.

What actions you take are all up to you. How much you believe in your business dictates the actions you’ll take to improve it.
